Library Director Retires!!!

With a long list of accomplishments, Cheryl Tollefson, the director of the Dickinson Area Public Library is stepping down.

During her time as director, she has been instrumental in expanding the services of the library in southwestern North Dakota.

Some of the highlight during her years of service include:

A 5400 square foot addition which increased the library's storage and seating capacity, added and elevator, community meeting

room, work space and stacks.

With the help of the Dickinson Eagles Aerie 2328, the library purchased a bookmobile van and added Billings County to our service area.

During 1989 - 1990 a two-phase renovation project was completed which involved replacing desks, history cabinets,

landscaping, restoring the dome and leaded glass over the north entry, painting, carpeting and electrical work.

The residents of Stark County began receiving library service and bookmobile service beginning 1990.

In 1994, the new "Page Coach" bookmobile was acquired with funding from Billings County and Stark County and various other donations.

The Billings County Resource Center in Medora was completed in 1999.

In September 2004, an expansion and renovation project began that added an additional 14, 272 square feet to the main library.

In 2005, Slope County was added to our service area including three additional rural bookmobile routes.

Cheryl was awarded the North Dakota Library Association 2005 Librarian of the Year.

In 2009, a new ThomasBuilt bookmobile was purchased to replace the one acquired in 1994.

Cheryl has always worked tirelessly serving library patrons in this area and will continue to do so in an advisory role for

several months during the transition.

Please join us at a reception on May 13, Thursday, from 1:00 to 3:00 PM

in the Community Room of the Public Library to honor Cheryl for her

years of service.   Refreshments will be served.

Make a Splash - READ!!

The Dickinson Area Public Library will be encouraging children to read
over summer vacation by sponsoring a Summer Reading Program.

We will be joining many states throughout the country
to promote summer reading with the theme:

"Make a Splash - READ!"

It is the goal of this summer's theme
to encourage children to maintain their reading skills
throughout the summer so their school year
can get off to a "swimmingly" good start next fall!

The program is open to Pre-school children through grade eight.
Children may sign up from June 1st through
July 12th.  Registration will be accepted at the Dickinson Area
Public Library, Billings County Resource Centers in Medora and Fairfield
and on the Page-Coach Bookmobile.  At the time of registration,
children and parents will be given specific information
about the reading program guidelines and a record log to
keep track of their summer reading.

Children who successfully complete the program will receive
a bookbag of prizes and the opportunity to register for
other special prizes to be given away after Labor Day.

Parents, please help us promote positive attitudes about books
and reading by signing your child up for this summer's
 "Make a Splash" reading program.

This is an opportunity for your child to "soak up" some lifelong
 positive reading habits.

 For more information please contact
the Dickinson Area Public Library at 456-7700.
