Less than two weeks after landing, 

on October 25 and 26, 1942 the Regiment was involved in heaviest fighting of the Guadalcanal Campaign. 

The Regiment held key sectors around Henderson Field and repelled the attacking Japanese force. Members of the Regiment killed nearly 1/3 of the Japanese forces while losing 26 KIA’s and 52 wounded. 

The 164th Infantry received the Presidential Unit Citation for the Guadalcanal action.
