DPL Library Card Policies

Library Cards

Library cards are available for permanent residents/property owners in Stark, Billings, and Slope counties free of charge.  For those living outside of our service area (within North Dakota), we offer a card for a $20 annual fee or $25 for a family.  Temporary residents can obtain a limited use card with a non-refundable $20 annual fee.

What you need to get a library card

Current picture ID with current address in the Dickinson, North Dakota service area
Physical proof of your address in our service area if ID is not current (no PO boxes)
$2.00 fee to replace lost cards

Process for obtaining a library card

The quickest and easiest method for obtaining your library card is to simply come into the main library in Dickinson, one of our branches, or the Bookmobile with your current ID and proof of address.  However, the Dickinson Area Public Library (DPL) has begun to issue cards to new patrons over the phone and through our catalog.  These cards will expire 6 months from the date of registration. They will also be restricted to checking out 3 physical items at a time.  New patrons will have full access to our electronic content.

Patrons will need to come to the library with a photo ID with their current address or a photo ID and additional proof of address within the 6-month period to continue their library privileges. If a patron is outside our services areas, their rural fee will be due at that time.  Once a new patron has confirmed their card and paid any fees if they are a rural patron, full library privileges will be activated and the usual expiration dates will be applied (five years for local patrons, 1 year for fee patrons.)

The DPL will provide new patrons with their card numbers over the phone or via email.  This is temporary and specific to the current situation.

Cards may also be obtained for other family members as long as they are at least four years old.  Each adult patron will be expected to come in person to verify their identity and place of residence and those of any children they obtained library cards for. Spouses cannot verify the information for each other, they must each verify their own information in person.

To obtain your new patron card, call 701-456-7700, or use the online registration process here.
